People are hungry for more effective ways to collaborate. Collaboration means usability, and unfortunately, according to a 2009 Watson Wyatt report, only 50 percent of company employees use intranets and 80 percent say the systems need improvement.

One of the big concerns? Search.

It would follow that in order to collaborate, employees should be able to easily locate content and information on company intranets. And archive retrieval should be fast.

Bill Ives notes in a review of the Global Trends Intranet Report, one way to make intranets more useful is to take a people oriented approach. He notes that companies have teams that are expected to use the intranets, but those teams are rarely considered part of the intranet.

Software consultant Julie Hunt talks about the employee as the customer, and the importance of designing intranets with the customer in mind. Search functionality was one of the key elements of making company intranets effective productivity tools.

Perhaps its time businesses made search a priority.

In recent notes from the Enterprise 2.0 conference, Bill Ives made some interesting observations, one of which was to question whether or not CIOs are starting to show signs of Enterprise 2.0 acceptance.

In other words, is company leadership, particularly on the technology side, ready to make the necessary changes to deal with their growing information management problems? According to Ives, many site privacy and security concerns as the reason for their hesitation to adopt enterprise data management systems. However panelists at the E20 conference likened such adaptation to installing bathrooms; it is absolutely essential.

Ives notes that panelists indicated that the adaptation of enterprise data management will rely on CIOs as well as the development of universal industry standards for communication and data.

Last week Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced a new web indexing system called Caffeine. This new index is designed to provide search results 50 percent fresher than the previous index, enabling users to find relevant content sooner after publishing.

Tom Nolle analyzed the affect of Caffeine, noting that the new index could be a double edged sword. On the one hand, fresher content and real-time news when catastrophe strikes is great news. One the other hand, the focus on speed of delivery as opposed to focus on quality and analysis “trivializes what the internet can do.”

He goes on to ask if by accepting results without any real depth of analysis and we lose the ability to have a real understanding of what’s going on.

“We can’t build an industry on Tweets…on small status updates,” Nolle said.

In an interview on Entrepreneur’s Daily Dose blog, Google engineer Matt Cutts indicated that Caffeine may provide fresher results, but Google has not thrown out it’s entire search algorithm.

“PageRank is [still] all important part of how we determine when to crawl a page,” Cutts said. He added that link backs and participation in social media are also ways to improve search visibility.

What do you think? Will quality suffer for faster indexing?

In a recent Computer Weekly article it was reported than in some instances cloud computing has cut data center costs by 90%. In an environment where everyone is looking at cutting costs, it seems very enticing.

Provided these numbers are correct, what does the future look like for on premise data center management? As Stephen Arnold of the Arnold IT group states, “Well, grim I suppose.” So what are the operational implications of such a potential shift? As Arnold and others see it, “Industry dislocation, limited choice, high costs, and reduced control.”

For those wanting similar cost reduction on search related expenses and to retain on site management of their data, we should talk.

In addition to providing superior search in terms speed, precision, and power, Perfect Search also produces unmatched scalability. Utilizing Perfect Search technology our clients have been able to drastically reduce the hardware needed for search. We’ve never shown less than a 5 to 1 search server reduction ratio and in most instances it’s much greater.

For the best of both worlds in terms of cost savings and on site data management, Perfect Search is the perfect solution.
