Perfect Search is proud to announce that the Perfect Search Software and Appliance will be featured enterprise solutions in Microsoft’s Partner Solution Center.

The MPSC is a place where businesses are introduced to new advances from Microsoft and its partners. This gives Perfect Search the opportunity to reach more customers and show off the speed, scalability and precision of the Perfect Search technology.

“For CIOs and information management directors dissatisfied with the high cost and poor precision and performance of today’s enterprise search,” said Perfect Search CEO, Tim Stay. He added that Perfect Search provides the speed, precision and scalability unlike any enterprise search appliance on the market today.

People are hungry for more effective ways to collaborate. Collaboration means usability, and unfortunately, according to a 2009 Watson Wyatt report, only 50 percent of company employees use intranets and 80 percent say the systems need improvement.

One of the big concerns? Search.

It would follow that in order to collaborate, employees should be able to easily locate content and information on company intranets. And archive retrieval should be fast.

Bill Ives notes in a review of the Global Trends Intranet Report, one way to make intranets more useful is to take a people oriented approach. He notes that companies have teams that are expected to use the intranets, but those teams are rarely considered part of the intranet.

Software consultant Julie Hunt talks about the employee as the customer, and the importance of designing intranets with the customer in mind. Search functionality was one of the key elements of making company intranets effective productivity tools.

Perhaps its time businesses made search a priority.

Document management isn’t always about finding files. Archive retrieval may be at the heart of document management, but there is so much more to it than that.

In a recent post, Alan Sharp pointed out that many businesses hold on to documents with little value, thus compounding the company’s document management problems. In fact, when analyzed, Sharpe says reports indicate that 10 percent or less of the content in archives are actively being used.

That’s a lot of wasted space. And I bet this content hoarding is not exclusive to Sharpe’s clients.

Sure organizations could manage databases and content with smart systems. Organizations could even use Perfect Search’s enterprise search engine to search those massive data bases using keywords and phrases and still retrieve documents quickly.

Wouldn’t it be easier to manage content and information if the databases weren’t cluttered with 90 percent–or more–unused content?

Just a thought.

We’ve been talking a bit about semantic search, so it was interesting to see someone discuss semantic search as it pertains to enterprise search.

In a recent post on the Enterprise Search Blog in terms of leveraging language for improved searches. The author, Lydia Moulton, noted that semantic search is also relevant for enterprise search solutions as well.

In this way, Perfect Search may actually be ahead of the game. If the goal is to be able to figure out the intent behind the search, the ability to search for phrases already improves search relevance. In fact, the meaning behind the search is quite possibly the most important development in search today.

As more and more organizations begin making the shift toward digital information (for efficiency sake, because of government mandate, or both), its important for us to examine why this digital shift is so important. Also important is how the information will be managed.

The writer at Words of Pie was pondering just such content management in a recent post about why case management needs content management.

For doctors, social workers, lawyers and other people who already work on “cases” this concept is a no-brainer. In fact, for these professions (and many others), case management is content management. As they make the digital transition, professions previously requiring large, complicated filing systems will still need a way to manage this information.

Truthfully, the filing system may be the easiest part. The challenge is often recalling that data at a later date.

Perfect Search recently teamed up with DataMax to provide just such a paper-to-digital/content management solution. We also recently discussed the need for enterprise search solutions for government agencies.

If follows that as more businesses and industries go digital, these industries and businesses will also need collaborative tools for sharing data.

At the heart of it all, is indexing the information and being able to find it fast.

Business analytics provider SAS recently announced a merger with U.K. software company Memex.
SAS Chief Executive John Goodnight said that he wants “…SAS to be the first company that public security organizations call to help them apply analytics to solve crime and protect citizens.”

This is proof that government agencies are finding ways to make use of enterprise search solutions to become more efficient. We should expect to see more such partnerships in the near future as enterprise solutions become increasingly essential.

In recent notes from the Enterprise 2.0 conference, Bill Ives made some interesting observations, one of which was to question whether or not CIOs are starting to show signs of Enterprise 2.0 acceptance.

In other words, is company leadership, particularly on the technology side, ready to make the necessary changes to deal with their growing information management problems? According to Ives, many site privacy and security concerns as the reason for their hesitation to adopt enterprise data management systems. However panelists at the E20 conference likened such adaptation to installing bathrooms; it is absolutely essential.

Ives notes that panelists indicated that the adaptation of enterprise data management will rely on CIOs as well as the development of universal industry standards for communication and data.

Previously, airlines were required to re-check the list every 24 hours for matches.

“This requires that each airline must receive the new list from Homeland Security, index that new list, and then look for matches against every passenger manifest of each flight that is departing within the next two hours. If they miss a name, they could face fines from the US Government. The complexity and burden placed on airlines could immense,” said Tim Stay, CEO of Perfect Search Corporation.

In the latest terrorism incident, Faisal Shahzad, who is alleged to have tried to blow up an SUV in TImes Square on Saturday evening, was added to the no-fly list early Monday morning, only hours before he boarded a plane to Dubai.

The no-fly list has been in effect since the September 11 attacks, but has required a manual check of the no fly list. It appears that in the case of Shahzad that Emirates Airlines missed his name, allowing the suspect to purchase a ticket and obtain a boarding pass.

“Perfect Search offers a high precision solution for airlines needing to run their passenger manifest against the No Fly List. We offer high speed indexing so when new names are added to the list, they can be searched with little delay,” stated Ken Ebert, CTO of Perfect Search.

The Perfect Search solution allows an extra degree of security to make sure that possible matches are flagged and highlighted, allowing airline personnel to manually focus on suspected hits to the No Fly List.

“Not only can we provide the high-speed indexing of new names, but we can search using Soundex and Double Metaphone functionality that allows similar sounding names with different spelling variations to be flagged for further evaluation,” added Ebert.

Perfect Search offers their solution as an appliance that is easy to install and operate.

“The airlines could be operational within days, giving them an extra tool to meet the new U.S. requirements,” stated Tim Stay, “When indexing and query speed is important, it is important to use Perfect Search.”

Throwing hardware at the problem may be great for the companies selling the hardware, but from licensing to energy costs more hardware means more cost, and folks these days are a bit more cautious when it comes to pulling the trigger.

I’m a fan of Stephen Arnold’s Beyond Search blog. For anybody wanting to stay up to date on what’s happening in search I’d highly recommend it. Mr. Arnold is a world renowned expert in search and updates his blog daily. Coincidentally he’s also a fan of Perfect Search.

If you’ve read his work, you’ve likely picked out some themes. One that holds particular resonance is this idea that most believe that if you’ve got a search problem, the traditional answer is to throw hardware at it. Having a database performance issue? Throw hardware at it. Having scalability issues? Hardware. Not getting the queries per second you need? I think you get the idea.

Throwing hardware at the problem may be great for the companies selling the hardware, but from licensing to energy costs more hardware means more cost, and folks these days are a bit more cautious when it comes to pulling the trigger. As one client recently said, “People are buying cheaper, not better. . . “‘

Enter Perfect Search. Using patented algorithms and methodologies Perfect Search clients are able to actually reduce the amount of hardware required to support search and we’ve never delivered a solution that produced less than a 5 to 1 search server reduction. In most cases the server replacement ratio is actually higher. Add to that the fact that the technology produces superior query precision, blazing index and query speeds, and all at an attractive price point and Perfect Search starts to look very appealing.

Given the above, it’s no wonder that folks like Stephen Arnold and the team over at Arnold IT are fans. We’re pretty excited too.

“People don’t really want to search. They want to find information.” Marjorie Hlava, president of Access Innovations, goes on to say, “Teaming with Perfect Search to create Search Harmony provides the best of all search technologies.”

Access Innovations of Albuquerque, NM, and Perfect Search Corporation of Orem, Utah, today announced a joint presentation for cutting edge search technology at competitive prices. “The combination of blazingly fast search with tools to increase precision and recall means that the relevance can be based on concepts rather than statistical ‘guess-timates’ and real ‘find-ability’ achieved” said Jay Ven Eman, CEO of Access Innovations.

“The search technology of Perfect Search is based upon ground-breaking technological innovation that provides the ability to quickly index and query very large data sets”, explained Ken Ebert, CTO of Perfect Search. Extremely scalable, Perfect Search already hosts databases of more than 1.4 billion records with sub-second search response time. The search can be faceted, full text, or a combination.

Adding the presentation layer from Access Innovations’ Data Harmony software suite gives the user the ability to improve search results through taxonomy-enhanced methods such as automatic completion based on the synonyms and taxonomy terms, related terms to broaden the search, narrower terms to refine the search, browsing of taxonomies associated with document sets, spell check, and recursive sets.

“I think you will find this very advanced and something which will fit the users’ semantic strategy by allowing ontology search and application. The search builds on the taxonomy / thesaurus/ ontology or other controlled lists. This lets the customer save staff time, quickly find and retrieve, and increase relevance accuracy, as well enjoy better precision and full recall” said Tim Stay, CEO of Perfect Search.
