Ditch the dead (content) weight

August 11th, 2010

Document management isn’t always about finding files. Archive retrieval may be at the heart of document management, but there is so much more to it than that.

In a recent post, Alan Sharp pointed out that many businesses hold on to documents with little value, thus compounding the company’s document management problems. In fact, when analyzed, Sharpe says reports indicate that 10 percent or less of the content in archives are actively being used.

That’s a lot of wasted space. And I bet this content hoarding is not exclusive to Sharpe’s clients.

Sure organizations could manage databases and content with smart systems. Organizations could even use Perfect Search’s enterprise search engine to search those massive data bases using keywords and phrases and still retrieve documents quickly.

Wouldn’t it be easier to manage content and information if the databases weren’t cluttered with 90 percent–or more–unused content?

Just a thought.

Government Agencies Need Enterprise Solutions Too

July 1st, 2010

Business analytics provider SAS recently announced a merger with U.K. software company Memex. According to the Beyond Search blog, this union will enable law enforcement and defense agencies to share and search for information globally.

SAS Chief Executive John Goodnight said that he wants “…SAS to be the first company that public security organizations call to help them apply analytics to solve crime and protect citizens.”

This is proof that government agencies are finding ways to make use of enterprise search solutions to become more efficient. We should expect to see more such partnerships in the near future as enterprise solutions become increasingly essential.
